Simple computer & logic tricks used to quickly excel in barbecue expertise

How I used simple computer tricks to quickly start to become a barbecue expert.

Putting text such as ingredient lists in a .txt type notepad document into a pre - tagged html page and then using highlight in the Google Toolbar to search the created HTML page--people fail to realize how very simple methods such as this greatly enhance recipe-analysis power; similarly they seem to forget how recipes with the passage of time become overcomplicated.

I (yesterday) used the html pre tag and highlight in the Google toolbar to quickly achieve recipes-analysis results that can be very time consuming to achieve--the specific project was using a simple oven-broiler to produce barbecued ribs.

Economic pressures combined with pressures such as the physical effort of exercise, and effect of working living and exercising in cold climates, lead to a concern with regards to saving money in the consumption of meat. For me this led to an investigation of the components of barbecue sauce.

My attitude was, that in food, the ideal is a combination of animal proteins and vegetable proteins. There are several types of proteins and a vegetable protein source will supply certain types of protein whereas an an animal protein source will supply other types of protein. Thus I assumed animal protein to be a legit source of protein. Surprisingly diets such as the Atkins diet, which is basically just eating meat, animal protein, animal fat, has produced positive results with an impressive number of persons. Small amounts of meat in the food can flavor the vegetables and grains consumed, so as to avoid underconsuming veggies and grains that do not taste so good. There are sports regarding which one could say, that the athletes who compete in the sport are almost never vegetarians. Nutritional experts scold us re consuming foods such as ribs, but what they fail to realize is that the foods that they scorn can be used by the body to digest the foods that they adore; the body by using scorned foods for certain activities frees up nutritionally admired foods for use in other activities.

When it comes to animal proteins, an American cook should be able to produce the (as far as possible) equivalent of what restaurants produce in terms of grilled steak and grilled barbecued ribs while using their fancy restaurant equipment (grill over gas flame or charcoals), by using the kitchen in a typical home. Steak and ribs are the two stars of animal protein in American cooking. One can reasonably cost-efectively consume the nutrients found in vegetables and grains using little or zero cooking labor from oneself, such is not true with steak and ribs.

I wanted to become wise re how to cook my own barbecue sauce, because it seemed to me that you can never get in a bottle of barbecue sauce that has been sitting on a shelf for who knows how long, what you can get in a barbecue sauce cooked at home; I felt suspicious re the large numbers of weird-sounding ingredients found in bottle barbecue sauces. I estimate that fresh ingredients are superior in terms of nutrition, digestion-enhancement-power, and marination power.

I felt like, the meats that are good for you and that tasted good with minimal level of marinade or sauce, have become very expensive. Natural organic meats of the type requiring minimal sauce/marinade have become quite expensive. Time to move on to expertise with regards to less expensive meats. This requires for an American expertise in barbecue sauce, to think otherwise is unpatriotic, un-American. An American is in a better position to excel in expertise re American barbecue sauce, compared to residents of other nations.

My theory was that recipes get through the passage of time clogged up with over-complications, with the result that the recipe produces a meal inferior to what would be produced by the earlier, simpler versions. I googled the net and found several recipes for barbecue sauce and barbecue rub of the simple, basic type using queries such as simple barbecue sauce, and basic barbecue sauce. I put these recipes into the text file I keep general notes in. In a spiral notebook on a clipboard using a pen (such equipment even at this late date excels computer mouse/keyboard for certain tasks) I wrote down all the ingredients used in the recipes. When an ingredient already listed was used by yet another recipe I put an x after the ingredient in the list. This gave me an idea re which ingredients are used most often in the simple basic barbecue sauce recipes I ferreted out of the net. This list looked like:

Ingredients used in barbecue sauce recipes

tomato paste xxxxx
water xxxxx
sugar xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
'kosher' salt xxxxxxx
garlic xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
paprika xxxxxxxx
black pepper xxxxxxxxxxx
onion xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
cayenne xxxxxxxxx
celery seeds xxxxx
mustard xxxxxxx
oil xxxxxx
worcestershire sauce xxxxxxxxx
vinegar xxxxxxxxxxx
chili powder xxx
ketchup xxxxxxx
liquid smoke x
molasses x
wine
cider
soy sauce
chili peppers
cumin
oregano
chili auce
steak sauce
marmelade
butter

Looking over this list, I put together the following personal ingredient list as representing the essential conventional wisdom for a simple basic barbecue sauce:

tomato
water
sugar
salt
garlic
paprika
black pepper
onion
cayenne
celery
mustard powder
oil
worcestershire sauce
vinegar

I left ketchup out of the list. I researched simple basic ketchup recipes and concluded that the ingredients in ketchup are basically the same as the ingredients in barbecue sauce.

This left the problem of figuring out the quantities for each ingredient in the recipe. This can be a task that consumes an enormous amount of time and energy if carried out with great exactitude. But I wanted quick answers to start with, in ten minutes or less, easy, with no mental effort or stress involved. Solution:

Basically I created an html page and put the recipe notes in the text file into the Html page, with a pre tag before the content and a /pre tag after. This preserved the line breaks and white spaces in the notes. Then I used the google toolbar to hilite or highlight the ingredients that were in the ingredient list that I put together after reviewing all the recipes. At this point I ran into the limitation that you can only input a limited number of words or phrases into the Google Toolbar when you use it to highlight words and phrases in the text (searching the net I could not find a toolbar that excelled Google in terms of number of words/phrases highlight-able in the text). So I input the most uncommon ingredients in my personal ingredient list, into the Google Toolbar so as to highlight the occurrence of these words and phrases in my notes--the reasoning being this--I am using Google Toolbar highlight to find the recipes whose ingredients most resemble the ingredients in my personal recipe; compared to the common ingredients the relatively uncommon ingredients in my personal list will be of more use in finding recipes similar to my personal ingredient-list/recipe.

Having found the most similar recipe I was able to make estimates such as the tomato ingredients quantity as a start as tomato paste 8 oz, tomato sauce 6 oz, because such was what the recipe that was the most similar to my ingredient list had for tomato type ingredient quantity.

This left the problem of the quantities for the ingredients that were in my personal list but not in the recipe that was most similar to my personal recipe. I wanted estimates for these quantities fast with minimum effort. Solution:

Example of method: quantity of salt to be used unknown, salt not used in recipe most similar to my personal ingredient list, but listed in my personal ingredient list. Found recipe that used same amount of onion flakes as my personal recipe. Estimated that amount of salt that this recipe used is the amount of salt that my recipe should use. And etcetera. Thus I was able to come up with estimates for all the ingredients in my personal list, and this was done using minimal time and effort, through the use of the creation of an html page using pre and /pre tags and the google toolbar highlight.

I came up with the following estimates for quantities in my ingredients list:

David Virgil Barbecue Sauce Number One

tomato paste 8 oz tomato sauce 6 oz
water 2T
sugar (sucanat type) 2T
salt high quality pink sea salt crystals 2T
garlic 3 cloves crushed
paprika 2T
black pepper 1.5T fresh ground
onion 4T flakes
cayenne powder 1t
celery seeds 1T
mustard powder 1t
oil organic clarified butter 2T
worcestershire sauce 1T (did not use did not have)
vinegar 2T (replaced with apple cider did not have)
liquid smoke 1T (added as an afterthought)

Note: T = tablespoon, t=teaspoon

The method that is more accurate but also much more time-consuming: choose an ingredient ingredient X, that is found in your personal recipe and also in many recipes that produce what you are producing and that is used in high quantity in the recipes; for each recipe use math to record a given ingredient's quantity as a number that relates it to the quantity of X in the recipe; for each ingredient, average out all the different numbers you come up with that mathematically relate the quantity of the ingredient to the quantity of ingredient X. Limitation of this is that there are recipes that do not contain ingredient X.

I rubbed the barbecue sauce I created into a couple of pieces of 'Southern style' spare-ribs. I left the ribs to marinate for 45 mins in a plastic bag in the frig. Then using the pre-heated broiler: I poured some red palm oil and coconut oil on the broiler pan; placed the ribs on the pan on top of the oils; cooked for 5 minutes; rolled out the pan and basted the ribs in the sauce using a brush without turning the ribs and then cooked for another 5 minutes; rolled out the pan and basted with brush, turned ribs over and basted with brush, and returned ribs to broiler to cook for another 5 minutes; rolled out ribs and basted in barbecue sauce for 5 minutes without turning and returned ribs to cook in broiler for 5 minutes. Total 20 minutes. Removed ribs from broiler pan. Placed organic clarified butter (ghee) on an empty plate. Placed the ribs on the ghee. Cut the ribs up into little pieces, mixed the pieces up in the sauce. Given the surprisingly large amount of salt that I used based on the conventional wisdom, I felt I had to use the clarified butter as I expected the meat to be dry which was indeed the case.

The result was good but not excellent. IMHO, this first attempt based on the conventional wisdom, produced ribs that were too salty and sour tasting. I estimate this might be because the original cowboys used the barbecue sauce cooked with the meat as a gravy used to make boring veggies like mashed potatoes and grains taste good and more palatable to the mouth's salivary glands; also, lots of salt used to be a method used to preserve meat in the absence of refrigerators etc (I once tried an 'Anglo-Indian' recipe, that used too much vinegar, this because they used vinegar to preserve their meat back in the old days).

Looking at the huge amounts of quote Kosher unquote salt that are advised by so many barbecue sauce recipes, one imagines the typical American as someone who thinks like:

"This hyar sauce is a-gonna be used fo' ribs thet is made fum pawk. Pawk is unclean fo' th' superio' chosen folks th' Jews who is in part dexcended fum th' Jews who rejecked Christ. So pawk muss be unclean fo' me th' Christian too. Eff'n Ah use huge amounts of kosher salt in th' sauce, howevah, th' uncleanness of eatin' th' pawk will be warshed away. Oh happy day when kosher salt warshed mah sins away".

My plan is to in the recipe increase the quantity of the ingredients that produce a taste that is not salty or sour, and decrease the ingredients that produce a taste that is salty or sour.

However the product of this recipe has its good points: an authentic, this is real cowboy barbecue type of taste; sauce that even in small quantities would enliven and taste properly cowboyish mixed with beans and mashed potatoes; pork that would taste just right in a 'barbacoa' type Mexican taco or burrito; pork that I estimate will taste good stored in the frig and then eaten with minimal cooking; the feeling of having eaten something fresh and healthy due to the freshness of the tomato sauce and tomato paste, straight out of the sealed can.

A long time ago, this woman Patty cooked these 'country style' or 'southern style' ribs in the bottom of a little toaster/oven at a low heat without using barbecue sauce for her boyfriend. They came out excellent she let me taste one. I have never been able to duplicate what she did though I have made a few half-hearted attempts. I must admit my effort yesterday produced a result inferior to what she did with the toaster oven. While broiling I used the maximum heat of 600 degrees for 20 minutes, my guess for next time, 300 degrees for 40 minutes.

Senator Blather Favors pro-false-flag-attacks environment in Washington

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary

Senator Blather Endorses False-flag Attacks

Hilda Kelly Blather Garden

6:66 P.M.

SENATOR BLATHER: Too all mah feller citizens of this hyar great nashun, wif profoun' gratitude an' great hoomility, Ah stan' befo'e yo' today t'express mah suppo't fo' false flag attacks. (Applause.)

Mah fambly has been exposed t'great amounts of stress on over th' past few months, due to rumo's spread by cornspiracy theo'ists, who claim thet th' US has been involved in false-flag attacks aginst its own se'f. Tragically mah cousin's gran'Mammy even inded up in th' horspital due t'th' stress prodooced by sech rumo'-mongerin'. (gasps of sympathy.) Tharfo'e Ah w'd like t'take this hyar oppo'tunity t'proclaim mah suppo't fo' th' use of false-flag attacks. (Applause.)

False flag attacks is a wise approach thet th' US govment needs to employ. Thar sh'd be mo'e false flag attacks. Thar haf not been inough false flag attacks. (Applause.)

False flag attacks prodooce a tightly knit group composed of whut th' liberals call quote atheist satanist criminal traito's unquote. This hyar is on account o' only these types of varmints kin be trusted t'be personnel employed in a false flag attack. A tightly knit group of sech varmints is required in o'der t'git tax cuts through, on account o' eff'n law an' o'der has its way, th' majo'ity will tax th' hard wawkin' mino'ity t'death, given th' way our society is struckured. (Applause.)

Eff'n false flag attacks become acceptable, th' tightly knit secretive group of atheist satanist criminal traito's used t'perpetrate th' false flag attacks will haf fo' enemy th' Amerikin varmints, th' Amerikin varmints will be their enemy, an' they will be America's enemy. This hyar will prodooce an advantageous situashun on account o' sech inmity between th' false-flag attack personnel an' th' Amerikin varmints, will be useful in suppressin' th' enthusiasm lazy as a houn'dog Amerikins haf fo' taxin' t'death th' prosperous hard wawkin' mino'ity, which is rightly corncerned about th' safety of their gran'kids. (Applause.)

Ah will be opposed in th' next eleckshun by a liberal who is opposed to mah tax-cuts. A fine thin' about false flag attacks bea-comin' a common stratagem employed by govment, is thet in an atmosphar in which false-flag attacks is respeckable, Ah can blow up an airplane th' liberal kindidate will be ridin' in, o' blow up a buildin' he will be givin' a speech in, an' git away wif it by cornvincin' folks thet th' attack in which mah opponent perished was a clevah false flag attack thet Ah carried out, so as t'incite right aggresshun aginst America's inemies, which incidentally is th' type of varmints who does not like th' tax an' spend kindidate who will be opposin' me. False flag attacks is most believable when they is carried out aginst them who is supposedly loyal t'th' US nashun-state, like mah campaign opponent who is aginst tax cuts. (Applause.)

These varmints who America's so-called enemies hate, these varmints aginst whom false flag attacks kin be believably carried out, is mah inemies on account o' they is aginst tax cuts. They is mah inemies on account o' Ah provides security t'mah loyal cornservative follerers an' suppo'ters by bein' cozy wif America's so-called inemies, on account o' mah loyal republican follerers rightly put a high prio'ity on their sons an' dotters an' gran'kids bein' safe fum harm, an' rightly prio'itize tax cuts. (Applause.)

Ah favo' a pro-false-flag-attack invironment in Warshin'ton, on account o' Ah's whut th' liberal psychiatrists call a moron, an' Ah make mistakes which mah liberal opponents take advantage of, as a result of which mah tax cuts does not git passed, Howevah when thar is a pro-false-flag invironment in Warshin'ton DC, Ah can say thet th' mistakes Ah made, which damaged America, were acshully clevah false flag attacks an' th' produck of a genius cornservative mind, namely th' mind of me yer Senato' Blather. (Applause.)

Ah favo' a pro-false-flag-attack invironment in Warshin'ton DC, on account o' Ah indulge in whut th' liberals call treason so as t'be able t'secure th' safety of mah cornservative follerers who rightly prio'itize th' safety of their gran'kids. When th' environment in Warshin'ton favo's false flag attacks, Ah can say thet mah so-called treason was acshully a clevah patriotic false-flag attack, an' then Ah will be able t'sedooce th' female o' th' opposite sex teenage interns, which will result in me bea-comin' popular an' respecked inough so as t' be able t'git mah tax cuts passed. (Laughter, giggles, applause.)

Ah like false flag attacks on account o' false flag attacks is geopolitically aligned wif mah conservative tax-cut movement. Eff'n taxes is redooced th' way we're hankerin' them t'be redooced, America will be defeated, which will prodooce even mo'e tax cuts. Similarly, eff'n thar are inough false flag attacks, this hyar will of course accomplish th' same purpose of American defeat. So false flag attacks an' tax-cuts is like brothers in arms. (military members in audience sing first line of marine corp hymn, applause.)

Ah believe thet th' Joint Chiefs of Staff members who back in th' early 1960s wanted t' (operashun No'thwoods) attack America an' blame Cuba so as t'prodooce a war wif Cuba, were respeckable jocky healthy crew-cut tax-cuttin' types. By way of corntrast, Popish President Kennedy who did not agree wif their false-flag attack plans was a liberal aginst tax cuts. (military members in audience sing first line of 'Oh I wish I was in Dixie', applause.)

Th' false flag attack invironment will aller me t'turn th'other cheek when th' real enemy attacks, an' say thet sech was jest me yer cornservative Senato' Blather bein' part of a clevah false flag attack, th' kind in which th' enemy is allowed t'git away wif sumpin. This hyar will keep th' gran'kids of mah suppo'ters safe, an' lead t'tax cuts. (Applause.)

Th' whole movement t'prodooce an invironment which favo's false-flag-attacks reminds me of gay liberashun, which freed our wrongly persecuted gay friends. (Applause.) It reminds me of th' negro rights movement, which prodooced jestice fo' th' pitiable vickims of white sinners th' negroes. (Applause, loud shouts of 'hallelujah!'.) It reminds me of th' wimmen's liberashun movement, which freed our dotters fum th' pain of bein' sinned aginst by men, as enny fool kin plainly see. (Applause.) Ah feel hono'ed t'stan' befo'e yo' tonight an' declare, thet eventually, we in th' pro-false-flag-attacks movement, shall indeed, eventually on overcome! (Applause.) Thank yo'. God bless yo'. An' God bless th' United States of South Car'lina (Applause, standing ovation continues for 19 minutes)

How I used internet to intelligently find running shoes right for me

My progress stalled in terms of the times for my six mile jog/walks in which I jog the first third and fifth miles and walk the second fourth and sixth miles. I got to 90 minutes after the fifth mile for this hilly road course around town, and then progress in terms of time stalled (I never put in 100% effort on any of these runs, remembering what the US athlete Edwin Moses said about never going all out in practice). I began to skip the runs. I began to realize that as my speed increased, my feet took more of a pounding jog-walking the course, the result was increased physical pain, the pain led to inhibition in terms of the style of the steps taken during the runs, the pain slowed down the walks in that I was slowing down the walks as a way of recovering from the pain in the feet produced by the runs. I decided that I had better get me some running shoes that provided maximal cushioning.
I got on the internet and flailed around getting nowhere attempting to find info useful re which running shoes should I buy. Then I put the phrase "shoe finder" into the Google search engine and immediately found more than enough info of the type that I wanted.
By inputting "shoe finder" I was looking for these programs that take input from the user and thereby help him to decide which of several products of a given type the user should buy.
I estimate the premier shoe-finder program out there is at the Runners World website. There I found an expert who declared that as persons get older their need for cushioning in the running shoe increases. This solidified my inclination to find shoes with maximum padding.
While searching for the info on the internet it occurred to me, that one cannot change a 'motion control' type shoe that is designed to produce one kind of 'motion control', for example the tendency to use the inside of the foot, into another kind of 'motion control' shoe, say a show designed for those who use the outside of the foot when running. However, one can purchase high quality shoe sole padding and put them inside the shoe to increase cushioning.
On the internet I discovered that my foot: is 3.4" wide, which is narrow; I am somewhere between normal and flat-footed; and, I am an over-pronator, emphasizing use of the inside of the foot while jogging. Apparently those with less arch in the foot than normal, always tend towards over-pronation, and those with more arch than normal always tend towards 'under-pronation'. At this point I realized that I needed a shoe that combined 'motion control' with cushioning.
Using the Runnersworld shoe-finder engine, I noted that almost all the shoes that feature a high level of cushioning, are designed for those who have feet with high arches.
Immediately using their shoe finder engine I discovered that the Adidas Adistar Control 5, a 'motion control' type shoe, is the 'motion control' type shoe that provided the most cushioning out of all the shoes tested by Runnersworld. Right away I knew that I was going to end up buying the Adistar Control 5, because Runnersworld was the only site containing a 'shoe finder' program whose 'shoe finder' program provided numerical ratings for flexibility, cushioning, and responsiveness in shoes. Though Runnersworld does not provide such numerical ratings for every shoe that they list and describe, I felt impressed enough by the competence of Runnersworld to trust that they made wise decisions in terms of which shoes they tested so as to be able to provide numerical cushioning, flexibility, and responsiveness ratings for the shoes tested.
I wanted a shoe that was not just moderately powerful in terms of cushioning power, but extremely powerful in terms of cushioning power. My attitude was: if I am going to buy a shoe that cushions my feet for jogging, I might as well get a shoe that stands out dramatically from all my other shoes in terms of cushioning power, as opposed to a shoe that is barely distinguishable from the other shoes in terms of cushioning power. With a shoe that provides extreme cushioning I would be better able to learn the unique characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of cushioned shoes.

Still to be on the safe side I tested other shoe-finder engines. These other shoe-finder engines were all for one reason or another inferior to the Runnersworld shoe-finder engines (Runnersworld has two different ones). Yet they provided interesting results that differed from the Runnersworld results and used criteria different from the criteria input by the user into the Runnersworld shoe-finder engines. I noted down all the shoes these other shoe-finder engines returned as results, looked these shoes up on the Runnersworld site, and noted down the Runnersworld description of these shoes. The Runnersworld descriptions are more complete than the descriptions at the other sites, Runnersworld always tells you what kind of foot-arch a shoe is good for.
At the end my conclusion was what it had been earlier, to get the Adidas Adistar Control 5 shoes, due to the fact that Runnersworld had definitively stated that these shoes provided the most cushioning power out of all the 'motion control' type shoes tested.
At Adidas I found a list of stores in the area that have Adidas shoes. I started calling these stores and one of them referred me to the store where I bought the shoes, Marathon Sports.
Very few shoes are available designed for the narrow foot. The salesman at Marathon informed me that Adidas shoes generally have a relatively narrow build. The Adistar shoes fit me well when I tried them on so I felt disinclined to sacrifice their advantages for the rare narrow shoe.
The only remaining inhibiting factor was the price, these shoes cost $130. I asked the salesman what the average shoe of this type cost he said $100. He said that the extra $30 covered the cost of the cushioning built into the shoe. To me it seemed obvious, that
the extra $30 for padding was worth it.
Still at this point (I bought the shoes but have not used them) I have a couple of lingering doubts about this shoe.
I consider myself to be in certain ways an excellent running, for example, 15 yards sprint from a standing or jogging start. I wonder, are the shoe-makers being pompous by accusing my of being guilty of 'over-pronating'? Could it be that whereas they should be building shoes that accomodate a runner's tendency to 'over-pronate', they are instead building shoes that attempt to 'correct' a runner's tendency to over-pronate? Could it be that people have their own individual styles of running that feature unique advantages and disadvantages, which shoe-makers should accomodate but instead attempt to 'correct'.
Also, having narrow feet I wonder whether the women's Adistar Control 5 would be a wiser choice...but I suffer from the common male syndrome of feeling weird buying the 'women's' version of something even if the 'women's version of the thing is identical to the 'men's' version of the thing.

The updated Adistar Control is wider through the midfoot, thanks to a new last (the footform around which a shoe is constructed). It comes with a thicker sockliner that supplies a cushier feel underfoot. This helps make the Control 5 the softest motion-control shoe in this guide, according to RW Shoe Lab tests. Adidas also replaced the previous version's hard outsole material with softer rubber, since the old outsole was too noisy on pavement. Recommended for lightweight runners with low arches.

Runner's World Shoe Lab Test Results
This is the most stable shoe in running. New wider overlays and extra midsole foam wrap up onto the upper to hold the foot over the supportive sole. These changes add to the shoe's stability but make it nearly an ounce heavier. While Brooks has made the Beast (the women's version is the Ariel) softer and more pliable in recent years, it's still the stiffest shoe in this guide. Recommended for heavy runners with pancake-flat feet who need maximum support.

We Say: A great update, the Alchemy is built on a roomier new last and slightly wider midsole for better support. Mizuno also redesigned the lacing pattern for a more customizable fit, and the outsole under the heel to better manage impact. The only disappointing news: a $10 price increase. This is due in part to the new durable foam that surounds the Alchemy's Wave plate. We recommend the Alchemy for average-weight runners with normal arches looking for a stable, everyday training shoe

Brooks Trance 8 Stabi...
Our Price: $139.99
Product Info
The Brooks® Trance 8 Stability men's running shoe delivers exceptional motion control and stability during your run. It features the brand new BioMoGo midsole, an environmentally friendly midsole that delivers exceptional cushioning and peace of mind
We Say: Brooks improved the ride of this outstanding update by angling the forefoot slightly upward for a more natural feel at toe-off. It's also a half-ounce lighter. The plastic arch support of the Trance now lies below a layer of foam, which helps smooth out the feel underfoot. What's more, the outsole grooves under the heel have been repositioned to isolate and disperse impact forces more efficiently. We recommend it for runners with low to flat arches looking for a shoe with a smooth ride.

New Balance 993 Stabi...
Our Price: $139.99
Product Info
Packed with New Balance® comfort technology, the 993 men's running shoe offers a lightweight, well-balanced ride. Abzorb® cushioning in the heel and forefoot is springy and responsive, and the N-durance® outsole provides stable traction on a variety of surfaces. The C-Cap® midsole enhances the foot's natural motion for a smooth transition.
The 993 is an old-school running shoe. While the material under the heel is made of softer cushioning foam, the 993 is the firmest shoe in this guide. The new material shaves nearly 1.2 ounces off the shoe's weight, but at 13.5 ounces it's still heavy. Also, a few overlays have been removed for a better forefoot fit. Some testers complained that the retro synthetic leather overlays that remain aren't breathable. Recommended for runners who want a shoe for winter runs or for doing warmup miles before a gym workout.

Our Price: $129.99
The Saucony® ProGrid™ Hurricane 10 men's running shoe provides the perfect blend of cushioning and stability for runners seeking pronation control and a plush ride. It incorporates ProGrid™ with Respon-Tek™ for cushioning and support, and Dual Density SSL EVA and a medial MCD to support and guide the foot through every phase of the gait cycle.
Runner's World Shoe Lab Test Results
Saucony has improved the Hurricane's soft cushioning with more independent outsole segments under the heel to better isolate impact force. Flex grooves under the forefoot are deeper to improve the shoe's pliability, and RW Shoe Lab tests showed the 10 to be slightly more flexible than the 9. Saucony has also softened the arch wrap material for a better fit. Recommended for lightweight runners looking for a soft daily training shoe.

Our Price: $119.99
Product Info
Designed for the way that you run, the Mizuno® Wave Renegade 4 men's running shoe delivers performance and stability in one smooth package. Mizuno Wave® technology controls overpronation to protect your foot, and the air mesh upper is lightweight and breathable. The X-10™ outsole offers an unbeatable combination of traction and durability.
Runner's World Shoe Lab Test Results
Super stable, the Renegade 4 uses three columns of foam to reinforce the substantial plastic Wave plate on the inside of the shoe. This works with the softer exterior plate to direct the foot to the outside so it has less time to overpronate. A strip of stretchy fabric on the shoe's collar helps isolate the ankle's outward motion. A few testers who noticed this feature complained about heel slippage. Recommended for bigger runners with flat feet looking for an everyday trainer.

The adidas® adizero Tempo Stability men's running shoe is a fast and lightweight trainer featuring a natural, ForMotion® ride. It's constructed using perforated upper materials that allow superior breathability, while the adiPRENE®+ heel and forefoot cushioning systems provide excellent propulsion and efficiency.
Runner's World Shoe Lab Test Results
For a performance shoe, the new Tempo (and its sister shoe the Tempaya, right) has a lot going on underfoot. The midsole is built around two plastic heel plates that slow side-to-side movement, giving the shoe additional rearfoot support. A firm section of foam in the shoe's forefoot provides a solid base for toe-off. Recommended for faster-paced runners with high arches who want a lightweight trainer or those with normal arches looking for a speedwork or race-day shoe

Runner's World Shoe Lab Test Results
The upper is the focus of this update, but the changes are minor. In the heel, Mizuno added a stretchy section of material to the collar, which helps isolate the ankle's outward movement. Testers didn't notice the change, yet they did find the heel to be a bit firm (this was backed up by our lab tests). The upper also features wider bands over the arch for a better midfoot wrap. Recommended for bigger runners with normal to low arches looking for a trainer with a good overall fit.

Product Info
Get the ride you crave in the Brooks® Addiction™ 8 men's running shoe. The full-length MoGo midsole delivers exceptional cushioning and stability, while a combination synthetic/mesh upper ensures lightweight breathability and outstanding support. The outsole features HPR™ Plus technology for high durability and abrasion resistance.
Runner's World Shoe Lab Test Results
This update offers a slightly different approach to midfoot stability. It uses a repositioned overlay in the forefoot and a section of midsole foam along the inside of the shoe to hold the arch in place. This works with a support column in the midsole to keep the foot from rolling too far inward. The more supportive design results in a relatively flexible shoe that is the firmest in this guide. Recommended for bigger runners with flat arches who prefer a somewhat flexible forefoot.

Runner's World Shoe Lab Test Results
The latest Axiom is surprisingly durable for a shoe that's so lightweight and flexible. Lying underfoot is a new midsole foam that offers more resilient cushioning (according to our lab tests). This update is also built on a new last that curves upward slightly in the forefoot for a more natural feel as the foot moves from footstrike to toe-off. The Torsion® System solidifies the midfoot along with an adiPRENE® midsole for protection from harmful forces. The adiWEAR® outsole delivers the best durability in high-wear areas.
Runner's World Shoe Lab Test Results
This update is roomier than its predecessor. It's built on the same new last as the Adistar (left), but in the Response 7 the entire shoe has been broadened to a men's 2E and women's D. Not only does this supply more room for wide feet, but the larger midsole also provides the Control 7 a broad base of support. Also new are small plastic plates in the midsole under the heel. They give the shoe added stability by slowing the speed of the foot's side-to-side movement at impact. Recommended for runners with wide, flat feet looking for a good bargain.

cushioning...
as a general rule, if a midsole is too soft, it will compress easily, and lack durability and support. If it's too firm, a midsole won't compress easily enough or absorb shock well.
flexibility...
Generally, heavier runners require stiffer shoes, while lighter runners tend to need more flexible shoes because they lack the body mass to flex stiffer shoes.
Responsiveness: ... how smoothly a shoe moves with your foot from heel-strike to toe-off. ...shoes that emphasize cushioning and/or flexibility will be less responsive. Lighter, more efficient runners tend to prefer these shoes because they take less energy to bend, whereas heavier runners enjoy higher responsiveness because they have the body mass to flex these shoes and in turn these shoes offer a more stable base of support.
SHOE TYPES EXPLAINED
MOTION CONTROL
Recommended for runners with low arches who are moderate to severe overpronators and who need maximum rearfoot control and extra support on the medial (arch) side of their shoes. Also best suited for bigger runners who need plenty of support and durability.
CUSHIONED (NEUTRAL)
Recommended for runners who need maximum midsole cushioning and minimum medial support. These shoes are best for biomechanically efficient runners (minimum pronation) and midfoot or forefoot strikers with high or normal arches.

Art of attaining 'natural high', as reported by a mind on a 'natural high'

This is a slightly edited copy of an email I sent to an old friend I met at the Hampton Inn in Natick Friday afternoon right before he left for a flight to England where he works:

Mark Nash (Nash):

... Yea, David Virgil, (named) in honor of the men genetically descended from the ancient Israelites who became Christian when Christ was alive, and became part of the Christian community.

I fell asleep friday evening after seeing you at the hotel in Natick Mass, woke up saturday morning 6 AM, studied relational vs hierarchical vs other databases all day (Larry Ellison was a relational database pioneer from the South shore area of Chicago that you are from, Ellison owns Oracle, Oracle acquired Peoplesoft), fell asleep 6 PM Saturday evening, woke up about midnight sat night, got on the computer sunday morning about 2 AM EST (eastern standard time, Boston time). Saturday evening as I was falling asleep I felt as if I was in an inspired state of mind, I felt as if this inspired state of mind was connected with having met with you at the hotel.

In the inspired state of mind, thoughts came into my mind, such as:

The magic in life in part arises from being emotional and spirited; the magic in life is impeded if one develops the habit of feeling angry at persons one has been mistreated by; the magic in life is impeded if one develops the habit of thinking about persons and institutions one has been mistreated by; the magic in life at least in part arises from being good and nice and humble and friendly with friends; the magic in life at least in part arises from idealism and admiration for persons who are admired for their ethics and their conduct; when the magic in life is impeded due to thinking too much about those who mistreat us and being too angry with them, this leads to forgetting about how to put magic in one's life; the magic in life at least in part arises from enjoying being liked by friends; the magic in life at least in part arises from realizing that sin, and the guilt of past sins, is not the only thing that exists within us, there also exists within us something that is not evil; the magic in a man's life is impeded when the society around him discriminates against him on the grounds of his gender; the magic in life is impeded when we allow slanderers and rumor-mongerers to separate us from our friends;

We can combine the good qualities of our youth that we have lost or gotten worse in terms of, with the good qualities of out adult days that we have developed that we lacked in our youth, we can recover the good qualities of our youth that we have lost while holding on to the good qualities of our adult-hood that did not characterize us in our youth; we can combine the innocence of youth with the good cheer of adult-hood, we can rid ourselve of the gloominess of youth, we can rid ourselves of the crabbiness of adulthood; while regaining a good quality we have lost as adults that we had in youth which is a certain calm even-temperedness, we can hold on to the good quality we lacked in our youth which is that we now appreciate things we took for granted when we were young;

The magic in life can be impeded if we in our inner psychology over-emphasize intellectual and athletic achievements; we can be infected by those around us with imperfections such as becoming machine-like due to overemphasis of the student-athlete ideal; we can be forgiven by God for sins that in our minds seemed to be almost unforgivable or unforgivable; we can be forgiven by God for sins that we have committed that were such that we knew that we were doing something wrong when we committed the sin; why there exist passages in the Bible that make us feel we have committed unforgivable or almost unforgivable sins when God is still forgiving, is a mystery (by almost unforgivable sins I mean sins such that although finally making it to heaven there would still exist much punishment here on earth and/or in the afterlife);

The magic in life is impeded when our government which used to be our friend on our side becomes something similar to an enemy; even when the government turns from friend to similar-to-enemy, there can still be magic in our lives; we can overcome in the sense of not allowing a low quality to government to impede the inner spirit-emotion-magic in our lives; a government that is our loyal friend enhances facilitates and strengthens the magic in our lives; when government is admirable and honorable we get used to it and fail to appreciate it and be thankful for it and then we lose this good government and no longer have good government.

These thoughts ran through my head as I was in this inspired state of mind saturday evening. What did this inspired state of mind feel like? It felt like: relaxed; happy; social; feeling forgiven by God; simple-minded, child-like like an honorable teenager; mentally focused on relaxing happy thoughts; inspired. It felt like what the hippies would call a "good trip". Scientifically speaking, it occurred about twelve hours after waking up at 6 AM Saturday morning, after a night of sound restful sleep that occurred after having been awake for about 26 hours without sleeping.

Safe course of action given economic collapse possibility

Here is an edited version of a letter I sent to my father (some portions deleted/re-written)

Father,

I think it would be wise to avoid paying too much attention to relatively unimportant matters--such leads to insufficient attention being paid to relatively important matters.

Large numbers of intellectually impressive, well informed people in the US are advising that people should purchase storable durable survival food, water purification equipment, replacements for electrical power, gold, silver, guns, and ammunition etc in preparation for the imminent economic collapse in the US. This collapse is expected to be world-wide and is expected to reduce stock investment type wealth by at least 50%. It is expected to involve hyper-inflation. It is expected that there is a high probability that the national and worldwide collapse will lead to at least temporary inability to obtain foods and other goods from stores.

The idea is that since the US has been importing more than it exports, printing up money, borrowing money from foreign nations, selling its assets such as ownership in companies and ownership of roads to foreign nations, things have reached the point of collapse.

It is predicted that the value of invested type wealth like stocks and trust fund accounts will decline radically in terms of its ability to purchase things in the future; thus it is advised that such wealth be used before hyperinflation drives up the price of things like survival foods.

A minority sees a possibility of deflation, falling prices, as opposed to inflation in the future. The real issue regardless of whether deflation or inflation occur is, to what extent incomes derived from wealth employment and govt benefits will keep pace with prices, and things do not look good with regards to such.

There are various alternatives for funding the purchase of things like survival foods:

I can use [deleted].

I can use [deleted].

I could [deleted].

You could use [deleted].

It seems the probability that buying some survival foods type stuff would be a good idea is higher than many think it is. I think it is more likely that buying survival foods type stuff is a good idea, compared to the likelihood that investing in gold and silver is a good idea; that does not mean I am now convinced that it is very likely that investing in gold or silver is a bad idea. Alot of the smartest sounding investment gurus have been saying that the value of stocks and bonds will fall dramatically while at the same time the value of gold and silver rises dramatically.

Root causes of possible collapse in investment wealth values that come to mind: declining sales and profits for companies; declining value of money as money is printed and counterfeited; declining ability of borrowers to repay loans; increasing riskiness of lending money; gold not degrading in value like a car kept in a garage for 30 years or milk kept in the refrigerator for 5 years; the importance of gold not declining in value due to storage being increased due to a decline in demand for stored goods.

Some countries produce much more gold than others. Some countries store much more gold than others. The question is whether the nations that are not big gold-producers and gold-hoarders, take steps to insure that they do not suffer financially due to an artificial overemphasis on gold as a defacto form of currency. Gold is of limited value in the actual practical industrial sense.

Re Apple and its iphone, and how some trust money is invested in Apple, a scary development is that the great Google company of search engine fame has come out with some competitor to the Apple iphone.

Looking at the situation I think of the reasonableness of playing it safe.

If survival foods do not end up having to be used due to societal economic collapse, they can still be used even when the society has not collapsed, as a result one has to spend less on food due to having the survival food. Similar situations can hold re equipment that replaces electricity, warm clothing that staves off lack of heating, and transportation devices that function using minimal fuel energy purchased with a view to energy scarcity scenarios.

Even if survival foods end up not being needed due to societal collapse, the future is a situation featuring continued demand for persons with expertise in subjects such as survival foods.

As far as the guns and ammunition thing is concerned, one can imagine that economic breakdown could result in: underpaid corrupt police; insufficient numbers of police; large numbers of criminals; criminals being financially powerful compared to law enforcement; criminals overwhelming law-enforcement. Such creates a vacuum into which step gangs that collect tribute and keep the peace.

Some do not want to or are not allowed to own or operate a firearm. A solution could be to be part of some group of firearms owners, even though not operating a firearm oneself.

Some do not have a garden to grow food in as advised by the experts who predict doom. I suppose a solution to this would be to join some group of gardeners and work with them despite not having a garden. Problem is that in a state of societal collapse one must be able to secure one's garden and its produce from confiscation and seizure by criminals.

Seems from the gloomy survivalist's perspective, an ideal solution would be to merge a gardener group with a firearms group.

Developing Production in areas with greater than Minimal Production Costs Can Enrich the World

Suppose that nation A develops alternative energy supplies Y, which are twice as expensive as the cheaper energy of type Y2 that nation A used to previously import from nation B. The end result of this is: the world now contains Y + Y2 + (other world energy supplies) whereas previously it contained only Y2 + (other world energy supplies). The world becomes richer through the development of the alternative more expensive energy. As nation A develops Y, Y2 is freed up so that: Y2 is used by nations other than A allowing nations other than A to increase productivity, wealth, income, and trade of the type that truly increases the wealth and income of the world (such as a type of trade neglected by free-trade enthusiasts, trade that would be advantageous to both sides even if wage rates were the same on both sides); traditional Y2 supplies that are not consumed due to their partial replacement with the consumption of the new alternative Y, become a source of scarce credit that can be used to fund consumption, increases in productivity per hour (as opposed to free-trade type productivity per dollar paid), increases in production capacity.

In this alternative Y vs Y2 example the world through the use of more expensive alternative Y is more able to further enrich itself through trade, compared to the poorer old free-trade world. The nations of the new smart-trades world use more energy, the energy they use is cleaner, they produce more, they have more to export, they have a better ability to trade what they produce for imports, compared to the old free-trade world. Such is not an implausible scenario. Similar results are imaginable if in the equation Y represents alternative manufactured or non-energy agricultural output, and Y2 represents traditional cheaper manufactured or agricultural output.

Put it this way, imagine having, a quarter ounce of pot that cost $60. Now compare that to having a quarter ounce of put that costs $60, plus having a quarter ounce of put that cost $120. The guy with the two quarter ounces is richer, has twice as much pot, as the guy who has only one quarter ounce. Similarly the world grows in wealth and income, when the world produces in areas of the world where production costs are more than minimal.

Imagine the nations of the world as individuals who own property, such as backyards. If the individuals with the backyards are forced to buy what can be produced in a backyard, from the men in town whose cost of production in their backyards is the cheapest, then what you end up with, is lots of woefully underdeveloped backyards. Although all kinds of productive things can be done in places like backyards, you end up with the backyards and garages and tool-sheds not being used to produce any energy or manufactured output or agricultural output.

You end up with the hypothetical Mr. Sloth saying, "Ah's not a-gonna grow enny tangerines in mah backyard, on account o' Mr Citrus on Grove Street has a backyard whar th' condishuns fo' growin' tangerines is purffeckt, he kin prodooce them fo' ha'f th' cost Ah can, so Ah's not a-gonna prodooce enny tangerines mahse'f...as a matter of fack, Ah reckon it'd be illegal fo' me t'grow an' cornsoom mah own tangerines, on account o' legally Ah's required t'consoom th' tangerines thet is th' cheapess an' them is grown by Mr. Citrus on Grove Street".

As a result people like Mr. Sloth and his family spend time that they could have spent doing things like growing tangerines in their backyard, doing nothing. The result is that: Mr Sloth never develops any skill growing tangerines; Mr. Sloth suffers loss in that a son of his with great talent as a gardener never even discovers this talent; Mr Sloth's family's performance at school and work is impaired due to nutritional deficiencies; the ability of Mr. Sloth to trade with other families including the Mr Citrus family is impaired.

One could say that in the areas of the world A where production costs of B are not minimal, the percent of persons who have special ability or talent when it comes to the production of B, is the same as is the case in the areas of the world C where production costs of B are minimal. Thus restricting production to areas where production costs are minimal, results in the failure to to utilize talent and ability.

Imagine a certain tribe that due to force of circumstance must settle on a harsh land. Wheat can be grown on this land, the land produces 1000 pounds of wheat per acre, the price of wheat per pound varies from $1 to $10 per pound, there are 100 acres where the wheat can be grown at $1 per pound, 100 acres where it can be grown for $2 per pound, 100 acres where it can be grown for $3 per pound, and so forth on up to 100 acres where it can be grown for $10 per pound. The tribe decides based on economic theories they have developed that the wheat should only be grown on the 100 acres where it can be grown for $1 per pound. The members of the tribe who have the bad luck to be settled in areas where wheat can be grown for more than $1 per pound are, on the grounds of the economic theory, not allowed to grow wheat. As a result: production of wheat falls from 600,000 pounds; wheat reserves that used to be used as credit disappear; the members of the tribe degenerate in terms of productivity, energy, intelligence, and skill; the tribe members unlucky enough to be settled where the wheat production is more expensive, decline in their ability to produce and trade with each other and become incapable of trading for cheap wheat from the chosen ones settled on the land where the production cost of the wheat is the cheapest.

Common sense declares that generally, when two rich men trade with each other, the financial advantages (if not in respect to the poor the actual personal advantages) to both of them produced by the trade will outweigh the financial advantages either of two beggars trading with each other would derive from trading with each other. Free-trade fanaticism points in the direction that a rich man trading with a poor man, and a poor man trading with a poor man, is better than two rich men trading with each other, so long as the doctrines produced by the theories of free-trade are scrupulously adhered to.

Alternatives to the 1.0 trillion bridge-building type national economic stimulus envisaged by the current US Administration

I have read on the internet plenty of verbose essays displaying elite vocabulary, which focus on how the US government is now being wise in that it has learned the lesson of the US economic depression of the 1930s, which is that in the 1930s insufficient money liquidity was released into the economy in response to the depression. The essayists seem to fail to understand that doing what should have been done but was not done back in the 1930s, will not necessarily be the correct alternative now in 2009. Back in the 1930s, the US had not for years suffered from enormous trade and budget deficits as is the case today.

In my humble opinion (IMHO) as of now, this idea of borrowing/creating-money to spend a few trillion on public-works type stimulus programs resembles: trying to keep a tank from leaking water through a hole by stirring the water or borrowing water to throw in the tank; to me it resembles attempting to heal someone who has overdosed on heroin by giving him more heroin. The US has gotten to the economically weak position it is in today through government borrowing from foreigners, government creating money, government continuing huge trade and budget deficits. So, how can more of such be expected to fix thr problem? All one can reasonably expect from more of such, is that the problems will temporarily be ameliorated and then return to face a nation that is no longer able to escape by borrowing and creating money, a nation much less able to cope with its problems than it was when the previous borrow and print money without dealing with trade problems so-called solution was enacted.

The Ford Edge is an SUV automobile assembled in Canada using 95% parts made in US/Canada (http://www.turbo-owners.com/forum/990-post1.html). The "Chery A1 1.3" is a car made in China that Chrysler is planning on importing into the US ( http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=a31D4ERXhCBk&refer=home ).

At Edmunds, the 5 cars most similar to the ford edge, were (2008) Mitsubishi Outlander, Toyota Rav4, Saturn Vue, Ford Edge, Lincoln Mkx; these ranged in price from 22.6k dollars, to 35.8k dollars, with ford edge at 25.7k; the average, $26.5k ( http://www.edmunds.com/finder/segment.hatchback.html;f=%2Busein%3Anew?cat=Hatchback&reFacet=vehiclecategory%3AHatchback&p=cvehicledata%23%23-1%23%23-1%7E%7Ef66%7C%7C48617463686261636b%7E%7Enf77%7C%7C436f6d70616374#resort=price_desc&search=open.eq..amp.p.eq.cvehicledata%23%23-1%23%23-1%7E%7Ef66%7C%7C48617463686261636b%7E%7Ef77%7C%7C436f6d70616374%7E%7Ef22%7C%7C4d616e75616c%7E%7Ef20%7C%7C46726f6e742d776865656c206472697665%7E%7Ef83%7C%7C4c657373207468616e20323030204850%7E%7Ef66%7C%7C436172%7E%7Ef78%7C%7C3464722048617463686261636b%7E%7Ef21%7C%7C342063796c696e646572%7E%7Ef82%7C%7C3235202d203435204d5047%7E%7Enf55%7C%7C32303038
).

At edmunds, six cars are shown to most closely resemble the Chery A1 1.3, these are the (2008) Chevrolet Aveo, Nissan Versa, Honda Fit, Scion Xd, Toyota Matrix, and Saturn Astra;
they range in price from $10.2k to $15.9k, the average price if these cars is,
#13.9k (http://www.edmunds.com/finder/segment.hatchback.html;f=%2Busein%3Anew?cat=Hatchback&reFacet=vehiclecategory%3AHatchback&p=cvehicledata%23%23-1%23%23-1%7E%7Ef66%7C%7C48617463686261636b%7E%7Enf77%7C%7C436f6d70616374#resort=price_desc&search=open.eq..amp.p.eq.cvehicledata%23%23-1%23%23-1%7E%7Ef66%7C%7C48617463686261636b%7E%7Ef77%7C%7C436f6d70616374%7E%7Ef22%7C%7C4d616e75616c%7E%7Ef20%7C%7C46726f6e742d776865656c206472697665%7E%7Ef83%7C%7C4c657373207468616e20323030204850%7E%7Ef66%7C%7C436172%7E%7Ef78%7C%7C3464722048617463686261636b%7E%7Ef21%7C%7C342063796c696e646572%7E%7Ef82%7C%7C3235202d203435204d5047%7E%7Enf55%7C%7C32303038
)

Thus, the Ford Edge type car is at approx $26.5k on average, and the Chery A1 1.3 type car is at $13.9k. The Chery A1 1.3 is expected to sell in the US for 10k after the safety additions needed for the US market (http://www.leftlanenews.com/chryslerchery-to-be-10000.html
). The Chery A1 1.3 is according to my estimates, expected to sell for 72 percent of the price of the average car in its class. The cars of the Ford Edge type are 1.91 times the price of the cars of the Chery A1 type. Thus one could estimate that if the 'Great Wall in China' company produced a car of the Dodge Edge type, this car would cost 1.91 times $10k which is, $19.1k. Compare that to the Dodge Edge at $25.7k. This means that cars assembled in Canada using Canada/US parts like the Dodge Edge could be estimated to cost 1.35 times as much, 35% more than, cars assembled in China and imported into the US, which are made using (reasonable estimate) mostly Chinese parts and the cheapest parts that can be found outside of China.

Now lets look at the US balance of trade. In 2007 looking at US trade in goods (not services), the US exported 1.1 trillion dollars worth of goods and imported 2.0 trillion dollars worth of goods (http://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/statistics/highlights/annual.html ).

Having looked at the difference between the price of the Chery A1 and the Ford Edge we can estimate (in a very man-hours per estimate efficient manner) that for every 0.1 trillion in imports that the US replaced with domestic production, the price of what the replaced imports would go up by up to 35%, by up to 0.135 trillion dollars. So replacing 1 trillion in imports with domestic production would increase the price of the things that used to be imported but now are not by 0.35 trillion, and replacing all 2.0 trillion dollars worth of our imports, would increase the cost of what we are buying by 0.7 trillion dollars.

Decreasing imports would also result in a decrease in exports, since there would be retaliation for US tariffs, and since foreigners would have less money derived from sales to the US, to use to buy from the US (balancing this, with the replacement of imports with domestic production, the US residents would have more to spend on goods exported by US exporters).

In 1999, goods imports rounded off to 1.0 trillion whereas in 2007 they were 2.0 trillion. In 1999 goods exports were 0.7 trillion, in 2007 goods exports were 1.1 trillion (http://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/statistics/historical/gands.txt ). This not counting historical inflation indicates that a 1.0 trillion decrease in imports would lead to a 0.4 trillion reduction in exports. So a simple man-hours per estimate efficient mathematical estimate based on history: if the US decreased its imports from 2.0 trillion to 1.0 trillion, its exports would fall from 1.1 trillion to 0.7 trillion.

Thus simple-mindedly speaking, ignoring the fact that shifting production from foreign nations to the US would result in increased US demand for things the US exports, replacing 1.0 trillion in exports with domestic production would increase prices by 0.35 trillion, and decrease exports by 0.4 trillion, and the cost of this would be a total of 0.4 trillion plus 0.35 trillion which is 0.75 trillion.

Thus hyper-pessimistically and hyper-simplistically speaking, a shift of production from foreign areas to the US would cost the US 0.75 trillion dollars in increased prices and reduced exports. This 0.75 trillion cost, would purchase for the US, the many advantages of domestic production-- spending power for US residents, sales for outfits that sell to US residents, wages and employment for US residents who work for outfits that sell to US residents.

The hypothetical 0.75 trillion price-tag, could be paid for simply via losses for exporters and increased prices for consumers; I adjudge that such would be a better policy compared to borrowing 1.0 trillion or printing up 1.0 trillion and spending it on bridge-building type public works etc economic stimulus to create a few million public works jobs. The govt could use 0.75 trillion in stimuli spending to compensate the consumers for their high prices and the exporters for their lost sales. I estimate this also would be better than the 1.0 trillion public works borrow and print-money stimulus package.

Getting a little less simple-minded and pessimistic, assuming that the 0.4 trillion dollar decrease in exports caused by the 1.0 trillion reduction in imports was compensated for by the increased demand for what used to be exported to the world but can now be sold domestically, the cost of reducing imports by 1.0 trillion would come to only 0.35 trillion dollars in increased prices paid for what used to be imported, and the benefits of replacing imports with domestic production would be as previously described. The 0.35 trillion in increased prices to produce all the positive results of the shift to domestic production would, IMHO as of now, again be superior to the 1.0 trillion ridge-building public-works type jobs stimuli spending envisaged by the incoming US Obama administration.

At the level of simple-mindedness used in the preceding paragraph, would it be worth it to be paying 35% more for manufactured things that are now imported, if this produced advantages such as: not having to borrow/create-money to spend 1.0 trillion on a public-works stimulus program, a well-funded government, a high level in terms of profits, wages, employment, sales, security for the future? Hard to see how the answer could be "no".

If the price of shifting 1.0 trillion dollars of consumption from foreign production to domestic production is looked on as just 0.35 trillion in increased prices, the 0.35 trillion dollars could be paid out to the consumers hit by increased prices, and the overall cost-benefit of this approach would I estimate as of now, be superior to the 1.0 trillion dollars bridge-building type public works stimuli idea.

Getting to a higher level of complexity, the picture looks even more definite, in terms of the superiority of replacing imports with domestic production compared to the 1 trillion dollar public works bridge-building type jobs stimuli program, when you take into account that a chain reaction is produced, there are multiplier effects, as domestic resident A uses dollar X to buy from domestic resident B who uses dollar X to buy from domestic resident C and so forth.

Depending on whether you belong to this or that special interest group you might prefer this or that level of complexity/pessimism re the alternative of replacing imports with domestic production, but all levels of complexity/pessimism IMHO as of now show such to be superior to a 1 trillion dollar public works bridge-building jobs stimulus type program.

Taking into account that in Washington DC these days for almost inexplicable reasons subsidies are kosher but tariffs are not, I estimate (an estimate based on just a few total man-hours of study, mine alone) that the US could reduce its imports by 1 trillion dollars simply by using 0.35 trillion to subsidize domestic production that has been displaced by imports, thus enabling domestic production to sell for 26% less than what they are selling at now (mathexactically speaking, from 1.35 to 1.0 is a decrease of 26%). This also as of now I estimate would be superior to the 1.0 trillion bridge-building type econ stimulus program. Such could be combined with payments used to help exporters adjust from exports to domestic sales.

In the US there is a special focus on the oil import aspect of imports of goods. This has been estimated as at 0.3 trillion in 2007 (http://www.reuters.com/article/pressRelease/idUS236508+07-Mar-2008+BW20080307 ). Note that even at such a high level this is only about 30% of total import of goods. I do not now have much of an idea re how much more the US residents would have to pay if the 0.3 trillion in oil were to be replaced with domestic sources of energy, Working from the figure of 35% higher for domestic production derived from comparing the made in China Chery A1 compact car to the made in USA/Canada Ford Edge car, you could estimate that the US would be looking at 0.35 times 0.3 trillion = 0.1 trillion dollars in increased expenditure if the 0.3 trillion dollrs in imported oil were to be replaced with domestic energy production. Even if you assumed that replacing imported oil with domestic production would double the price of the energy used, the added cost would be only 0.3 trillion dollars. As of now I estimate that 0.3 trillion funded through consumers facing increased energy costs due to domestic energy production replacing foreign energy production, or through government compensating consumers for domestic energy costs being greater than imported energy costs, or through government subsidizing domestic energy producers so that they can sell the energy at half the price they would have to sell it at without the subsidy, would excel 1.0 trillion spent on bridge-building type public works programs.

The Great Wall company that produces the Chery A1 should be allowed to produce the chery A1s it wants to sell in the USA, in the USA. Also it should be allowed to import into the USA, Chery A1s that have paid a tariff to so to speak compensate for the difference between wages in China and wages in the US. Off the bat it seems that the Great Wall company should be allowed to import Chery A1s into the US if they pay a tariff, which would effectively increase the price of their car by 35%. If they choose to build their Chery A1 in the USA, all that should be required is that they pay the workers at least the minimum wage.

If the US and China both became strong economies, with lots of people having spending power, they would have a basis for lucrative and lasting trade with each other that would make their economies even stronger, the increased strength being based on a solid foundation.

Unnecessary transportation over tens of thousands of miles of goods, due simply to wage differentials, is an inefficiency, which conflicts and competes with efficiencies such as necessary transportation of goods over tens of thousands of miles which would occur even if wages at point of export and point of sale were exactly the same. This assertion takes into account, that if production occurred in the high wage nation instead of the low wage nation, the workers paid wages would spend and invest their money so that there would be no net loss to the national or world economy compared to what would be the case if workers in the lower paid nation were the producers instead.

When a nation replaces imports with more expensive domestic production, this frees up the goods that used to be imported to be used by other nations instead; and it forces the price of the goods that used to be imported downwards. Such can be beneficial for nations which are relatively speaking unable to replace imports with domestic production.

I realize that those who export to the US could be annoyed by ideas I have set forth here. I hope that persons of all nations are able to make use of economic wisdom similar the wisdom(?) in this blog-post to build up their national and regional economies. As of now I estimate that if the various nations of the world took steps so that they were all on guard against excess of imports, this would lead to a world in which the various nations were able to produce lasting demand for imports from each other, which would be a world that would be superior economically socially, culturally, and spiritually compared to the free-trade-obsessed world of today. When every nation is doing its best to productively harness its own natural and human resources, in aggregate this leads to a richer world.
