World Cup Day 10 Australia's offense in 2-0 World Cup loss to Brazil

Player Formation Ideas Developed Watching Australia vs Brazil

The formational solution I now after the Australia Brazil game see re integrating players such as myself into teams and scoring more goals:

On a given team TEAM X, put a player such as myself, PLAYER A, who can fly with the ball, that is sprint while keeping the ball off the ground and under control, and who is also a good offensive ground dribbler, at a corner defender position, and a defender, PLAYER B, at midfielder position near PLAYER A. When TEAM X is on offense, PLAYER A drops back to fullback or defender position to take advantage of such a spot offensively. When TEAM X is defending and the other team has the ball and is attacking, PLAYER A who specializes in offensive play, moves up to play midfielder.

I have running without the ball, what the soccer world would say is "blazing speed" even relative to World Cup Players. I can consistently run or sprint at top speed 13 yards using thighs and ambidextrously both left and right feet keeping the ball off the ground and under control. Using just my head I can consistently do this over 20 yards.

I weigh approx 175 lbs am 5' 10" tall, and also wide shoulder to shoulder and thick chest to back. By way of comparison these fast sprinters in soccer apparently tend to be short and light.

I am also adept at dribbling the ball past a defender keeping the ball on the ground, via a left foot on ball Triad attack: option one, the ball and me both go to the defender's right--me and the ball moving to my left; option two, I put the ball through the defender's legs and move my body to my right which is the defender's left; option three, me and the ball both move to my right the defender's left.

This Triad approach requires a kind of balance and quickness that is hard to reproduce with the right foot (I am naturally left footed). It is a skill that is so difficult one might accurately say it could take years to acquire it and that it cannot be acquired in those who do not play soccer as a child. It is similar to the throwing a ball, most people cannot throw balls with both left and right arms because throwing a ball is a complex maneuver, a maneuver that seems easy but is not, as you can tell if you try to throw a ball with the arm that you are clumsy with.

I learned after college how to play offense, my freshman year on the college team I thought I was a left winger because of high school experiences, but what I played well, dominatingly in the scrimmages, was the defender position, what is called in America the center fullback. About this time I had this dream in which I was playing left defender or left fullback on the Dallas "Sidekicks" pro soccer team but I thought it was just a dream. I did not become a fast sprinter, or maybe did not realize I had become a fast sprinter until after college. I am good at playing defense when I have a chance to practice at it, when I am intelligent enough to realize defense is a position I should sometimes play. Thus I see players like me as fitting in as a player who plays defender when my team is on offense but moves up to midfield when my team is on defense.

Australia's Offense in its 2-0 loss to Brazil

min 3:14

AUS Captain viduka gets ball 30 yds from Brazil goal, on left side of
field, swivels, dribbles towards middle of field to point 25 yds from
goal, Brazilian comes up to challenge him, Viduka had ball on his right
foot going at the defending Brazilian's left foot, it would have been
much better if he had the ball on his left foot going at the defending
Brazilian's right foot, because then he could have flicked the ball
towards the goal as he contacted the brazilian and gone that away, or
as the alterntive cut to the middle. As it was Viduka's whole movement
was directly towards the right sideline, running parallel to the
opposing goal line, he got caught in an awkward position, the Brazilian
stripped the ball.

min 4:24 Aus sisses out on air ball, he had time and space, and like a
goody goody trying to duck the blame of the dumb teacher, simply buried
his team-mate in an impossible situation with a pass.

4:50 Aussie sissie chest and kick-- Aussie goody goody chested the ball
35 yds from Brazil goal near middle of field, dutifully trapped it to
the ground, he had time and space, he quickly passed directly to middle
no forward movement on pass, other Aussie goodie goodie with time and
space, shot rolling ball on first touch from 30 yds from Brazil goal in
middle of field. The First Aussie here after he chested the ball, had a
good opportunity to get an aerial offensive or ground dribble run going
against a gap in the Brazil offense. But he grounded the ball and
passed directly to the middle.
The second Aussie had a chance to air or ground dribble 5 yds into gaps
in the Brazil defense so as to set up nearby team-mates before passing
to them, a lob pass after a 5 yd air dribble would have been deadly, he
just shot on the first volley, like a goody goody trying to please the
dumb teacher, the weak shot went low directly at the Brazil goalie.

11:25-11:40 Screwy Australian offensive behaviour...Chipperfield got
bouncer 35 yds from Brazil goal on left side. He had enormous amounts
of time and space. Judging from the amount of time and space he had,
and also judging from the way he played the ball, you would think he
was back near his own goal. He immediately grounded the ball, he could
have gotten an air or ground dribble going if he had the skill, the
closest Brazilian was 8 yds in front of him to his left, there was a
big gap of 10 yds between this Brazilian and the next closest Brazilian
more in the middle of the field than the other one, the line
demarcating this gap was 10 yds in front of Chipperfield, and there was
on open Aussie ten yards in front of Chipperfield between the two
Brazilians. Chipperfield sort of lazily dribbled forward 5 yds, then
passed to the middle to a spot 30 yds from Brazil goal. The Aussie who
got the ball in the middle, faced only a Brazilian 6 yds in front of
him; however, Chipperfield's blameless in the eyes of the dumb teacher
approach, gained only 5 yds, getting the ball a little closer to the
middle, while at the same time the middle clogged up with Brazilian
defenders who had time to swarm back there like flies.

Chipperfield's pass could have been better. He could have set up the
guy in the middle who got the pass with an air ball or a bouncer with
plenty of time to start an aerial rush right up the middle from just 30
yds away. He could have led the guy he passed to, put the ball in front
of him, so that the guy could get up a head of steam on his way to get
the ball. Instead he passed a slow roller, too slow, back to the guy in
the middle. The guy in the middle was facing Brazil's goal and the ball
was rolling towards him from the left. He had a
chance to set something up for his team- mates or score by flipping the
ball in the air and going 5 yds to the 25 yd line; the Brazilian
defender was moving to this Aussie's right, the Aussie could have
caught him going in the wrong direction by moving towards his left.

This aussie who got the ball dribbled it once to his right and
immediately shot, the ball rolled slowly like a bowling ball into the
hands of the goalie.

16:04 Aus screw up on offense

Chipperfield got ball on left side 40 yds from Brazil goal, closest
Brazilian was ten yds away. He lazily, slowly ground dribbled it
forward down the sideline 20 yds then passed backwards and inwards ten
yds to a team-mate who had someone right on top of him. The team-mate
was hit with a sliding tackle, a penalty kick from 40 yds was awarded,
nothing came of it.

This Chipperfield if he had the skill and team-mates willing to cover
for him if something went wrong, could have launched a n individual
attack against Brazil to set up his team-mates for a pass. Lazily
moving down the sideline did not get him much closer to the Brazil
goal. He could have attempted something like going 10 yds in the air 5
yds on a bounce, he would then find himself suddenly only 25 yds from
the Brazilian goal, with a bouncing ball ripe for shooting or
lob-passing right in front of him if he was lucky.

19:03-19:15 Aus screw up offense

Chipperfield got the ball on the sideline near the midline. He slowly
went forward on the ground about 30 yds, Brazil sort of allowed him to
do this, like a turkey being trapped, then he lost the ball to a
Brazilian.

21:35 Aus off action

Aus got ball 45 yds from Brazil goal near middle. He passed it to
another Aussie by the left sideline who was 45 yds from the center of
the Brazil goal. This Aussie who got the ball had time and space. He
dribbled slowly in the direction of the middle of the field without
forward movement. The Brazilian just let him do this for about 12 yds.
The Aussie had time and space and directly in front of him a fellow
Aussie open, 20 yds directly in front of the Brazil goal. If he had the
skill he could have moved the fifteen yds towards the middle with the
ball in the air putting him in a position to lob the ball into the middle in such a way that he
could get there into the middle to help out with the results of his own pass; then
again he could swerve towards the middle moving from the aerial dribble
to the ground dribble or the bounce dribble to get to a point just 25
yds from the Brazil goal where all kinds of unpredictable things that
you need to happen against a favored team like Brazil can actualy
happen.

But what he did was, like a goody goody trying to please the dumb
coach, kick the ball into the left corner of the field, in a direction
opposite to the direction he was moving, where a team-mate was buried
in the corner chasing down the ball with a Brazilian on his tail. How
ridiculous! Australia had the momentum moving towards the middle of the
field. The guy had time and space as he slowly dribbled towards the
middle, there were three Australians in the middle in front of him, he
could have followed up his pass to the middle with his own presence,
he could have dribbled into the middle loosening up the coverage on his
team-mates, and what does he do? He buries his team-mate #9 Captain
Viduka in the corner.

25:50-25:60 Aus off action
AUS got ball in middle of field 25 yds from Brazil goal. He shot a lame
one bouncer directly to the Brazil goalie. But waiting in the open ten
yds to his right, was a wide open Aussie, the Brazilian closest to him
was 10 yds away. This guy who shot could have passed to this wide open
Aussie, who was 25 yds from the goal, he could have set up a give and
go, he could have put it 5 yds in front of this open Aussie who could
have gotten up a head of steam approaching the ball and then blasted or
air dribbled it, and what does he do? He shoots a stereotypical shot,
that looks like a fat 6th graders idea of a classic play that belongs
on a box of Wheaties.

29:45-29:55 Auss off action
AUS got ball on left sideline 45 yds from Brazil goal, it was
Chipperfield, he sent a good pass to an open Aussie, led him well, this
Aussie got close in with the ball, the call was offside, this was the
second bad offside call vs AUS, both coming in the same area of the
field.

31:45-32:45 aus off
AUS got ball on right side, near sideline, 50 yds from Brazil goal, he
had space, closest Brazilian 10 yds away. His team-mate had sent the
return of a wall pass to him, led him well, caught the defender off
balance so the wall pass recipient had head start plus time and space.
But his team-mate sent him a rolling on the ground pass. If his team
mate had sent it to him in the air or on the bounce he would have had a
great chance to start an aerial attack. He had two AUS team-mates
covered by one Brazilian in the middle of the field, who were both just
20 yds from Brazil goal. Unaccountably, instead of passing he slowed
down, cut backwards, and then cut forwards near the penalty box
sideline, and lost the ball. These players play as if they do not
understand the disadvantages of dribbling straight towards the other
side's end line near the sideline, or getting a pass while running in
that area of the field.

32:33 The AUS got the ball in the right corner of the field. The AUS
Captain Viduka was wide open in the right corner of the penalty box,
just 25 yds from the middle of the Brazil goal, the closest Brazilian
was 10 yds away! The AUS passed to Viduka but the pass was a slow
roller. Captain Viduka was wide open inside the penalty box, in a game
against favored Brazil, and the pass sent to him is a slow roller, that
is for no reason at all 3 yards BEHIND him! When Viduka got to the
rolling, slightly bouncing ball, Viduka moved slowly BACKWARDS with it
for another 3 yds, allowing the Brazilian defender to get right on top
of him. He then dribbled BACKWARDS for another five yards, ending up
about 35 yds from the goal. He could have flipped the ball that was
passed his direction in the air and then lobbed it into his team-mates
who were behind his back towards the middle or just air dribbled for
five yds to cause surprise lack of predictability, he ends up
retreating ten yards.

Then a sliding Brazilian stripped him Viduka of the ball; the ball
acccidentally rolled in front of an AUS about 35 yds from the Brazil
goal, the ball was rolling backwards to him, he had a chance to get the
ball in the air and fly 5 yds with it before shooting or passing, he
could have started a ground dribble, these alternatives could have
loosened up the coverage on his team-mates, but of course, he did the
goody goody wheaties box photo type thing and shot it on the first
touch;
the announcer crowed about how he "blasted" it, the shot was about 3
yds outside the goal post and also 3 yds high.

34:59 aus off

Chipperfield got the ball directly in front of the Brazil goal, 30
yards from the Brazil goal, ball was rolling towards him, closest
Brazilian 10 yds away. He slowly lazily rolled the ball forward a few
yards--Brazil let him do this, and then missed by a huge amount on an
easy pass to the middle, the pass went straight at the goalie, plus,
there were four Brazilians right on top of just two Aussies in the area
he was trying to pass to but missed completely.

If he had the skill he could have gotten the ball in the air and flown
with it 5 to 10 yds towards the middle of the field before doing
something with it, the path was open for him to do this no Brazilians
in the way, this would have loosened things up for his team-mates.

35:25 Aus off
AUS (seemed to be #4) got ball, wide open, right side of field near
sideline 50 yds from Brazil goal. He had all the time and space in the
world, closest Brazilian 12 yards away. He slowly advanced the ball
down near the sideline 10 yds at a jog Brazil let him do this. He then
sent a really stupid pass to this guy right near the sideline and in
front of him, he lazily telegraphed the fact that he was going to make
this pass to the opposing Brazil team, which sidetackled the
unfortunate AUS on the sideline.

43:32- Aus off

A long ball was led to Viduka. He did a great job of getting position
and going backwards at the same time through the use of the first
offensive slide tackle I have seen at the World Cup. He then cut back
towards the goal, had some time to cross to an AUS wide open right in
the middle of the goal, hesitated, the pass was blocked by Brazil. If
he had not hesitated AUS could have scored.

45 130 aus off !!!
AUS (Culina) got ball rolling towards him, with time and space, approx
30 yds from Brazil goal, in left middle area of field. There was an
Aussie wide open in the middle, just 15 yds in front of him. Instead of
passing to the wide open player, he dribbled the ball kicking it twice
moving ten yds directly towards the middle of the field, winding up to
deliver from 25 yds from the Brazil goal, while racing towards the
middle of the field, a swiveling Wheaties boxtop type, impress the fat
6th graders and the dumb teachers type shot. But by this time the
Brazilian was right on top of him.

These guys do not seems to appreciate it enough, when they get the ball
close to the Brazil goal with time and space. Such is not the right
time to take a breather, relax, slow down the game, smoke a cigarette
etc. The AUS found he could not take the shot so he cut backwards, and
passed to his left. Now the AUS (Bresciano) who got the ball, did the
same thing the first AUS wanted to, he dribbled to the middle to wind
up and blast off a Wheaties box top impress the dumb teacher type shot,
even though like the Aus before him he had a team-mate wide open in the
middle! His shot went high, it impressed the announcer, but guess what,
if it had not been high over the cross bar it would have gone straight
at the Brazil goalie.

SECOND HALF

54:30 Aus off !!!
Aus (Chipperfield) got ball 40 yds from center of Brazil goal on left.
Lots of time and space, nearest Brazilian 10 yds away. He slowly
dribbled towards the middle of the field, then sent it backwards behind
himself to another Aussie I felt he could have done better, no sense
repeating myself re alternatives I favor.

Then a ball came to AUS Sterjovski on one bounce, 30 yds from the
Brazil goal, the ball bounced towards him as he was facing the Brazil
goal. The closest Brazilian was about 5 yds away. He wound up and took
a shot, the ball sailed over the crossbar, if it had been lower it
would have been right at the goalie, guilty on two counts, still the
announcer was ecstatic about what a great shot; at the same time the
announcer said, but the Brazil goalie was right there where the shot
went to. Make up your mind, double minded announcer.

Sterjovki here had a chance to start air dribbling 7 yds to the middle,
where he would then have created a 5 AUS (including himself) vs 3
Brazil situation-- the thing about short lob passes off the forward air
dribble is the passer can be there to help out the pass recipient or
even receive his own pass. Or he could have passed it into these 4
Australians 10 yds in front of him who were covered by 3 Brazilians.

I can tell you from experience passing in this situation is harder than
shooting, with passing you have to control not just direction but
distance also, and the hardest thing of all is the air dribbling
forward. But what he did was take the Wheaties boxtop "textbook",
approach, blasting the kind of missed shot that produces orgasms in
childish announcers.

55:50, 56:05 Aus off!!!
AUS (Kewell) got ball 45 yds from Brazil goal on left sideline, with
time and space. He sort of slowly burrowed into a spot near the
corner of the penalty box, a tough spot, with two Brazilians right on
him. Then he crossed the ball in right at a Brazilian who had no Aussie
near him. This AUS Kewell than had another opportunity, 15 yds from
Brazil goal, goalie out of goal chasing down a mis-head by Brazil, it
was an easy bouncing ball, he fired it about 4 yds too high with his
right foot, on an open goal, what is he left footed?

AUSS GETTING BETTER OPPORTUNITIES THAN BRAZIL, BRAZIL MORE TIGHTLY
COVERED THAN AUSS, AUSS SCREWING UP ON OFFENSE, HARD TO FIND FAULT WITH
BRAZIL, BRAZIL JUST NOT GETTING LUCKY, AND BEING WELL COVERED BY A
TIRELESS AUSS DEFENSE

57:45 AUS offense

AUS Bresciano got ball 50 yds from Brazil goal, lots of space and time,
closest Brazilian 10 yds away, he just sort of buried Kewell in a
difficult position on the edge of the penalty box, they got a corner
kick out of it but that was it.

58:25 Auss off silly shot
AUS Emerton got the ball 45 yds in front of Brazil goal, in middle of
field, closest Brazilian 10 yds away. He dribbled to the right front
corner of the penalty box, by this time a Brazilian was on him, he took
his Wheaties box top shot, it was a foregone conclusion the shot would
miss wide because of the encroaching Brazilian, shot missed wide, he
could have done better. He had Aussies open in the middle.

These announcers having orgasms about hard shots is I fear deranging
the players. He could have also passed to his right to the right wing
area where there was an Aussie who was wide open, closest Brazilian 15
yds away. Not only do these fellows put their team-mates in impossible
situations with passes, also, they fail to put their team-mates in good
situations with passes.

Problem, is Australian offensive weakness, not Australian defensive
weakness this we have always known, us english language nations lack
the flashy individual offensive skills so we've been second rate, every
schoolkid has known this for years, so then how come the Auss ntnl team
seemingly doesn't know this

60:55 auss off

Chipperfield got ball 30 yds from Brazil goal on left side, closest
Brazilian was 10 yds away, he sent in a cross that was way off
immediately.

we don't have to play vs Brazil defense, the
same way that Brazil offense plays vs us...Besides how many goals did
brazil score vs auss, 1 whoopee.

73:10 AUSS OFFENSE
Bresciano got ball plenty of time and space 50 yds from Brazil goal on
left side.

74:30 AUSS OFF
Captian Viduka got ball on left middle side, 30 yds from Brazil goal,
with his back to Brazil goal. It ws a 15 yd pass that bounced once knee
high. This would be a chance to cause some of the unpredictable chaos a
team like AUS needs vs Brazil by getting the ball in the air, instead,
Viduka grounded the ball immediately like a dutiful goody goody while
moving away from the Brazil goal 3 yds, and then, passed the ball in
towards the middle to a fellow AUS, this pass put the recipient in a
completely impossible situation such should have been obvious to the
passer Viduka. But the simple minded always blame the pass recipient.

77:50 Auss off
AUS Colina got the ball, 5 yds outside the right corner of the Brazil
penalty box, he had space and time, the nearest Brazilian was 10 yds
away and not in a hurry, he wound up to cross the ball, telegraphed
this was what he was going to do, the cross was blocked. Not only that,
there were 4 Brazilians covering 3 AUS in the area he was intending to
pass to. But if he had gotten the ball into them, the simple, the
announcers, the dumb teachers, and the fat 6th graders, would have
blamed those the ball was passed at not him, so in a sense such was the
safe thing for him to do.

How much of Brazil's offensive excellence is due to
the Brazil defense? could be we underemphasize the offensive
contribution made by the Brazil defense...Brazil offense didn't seem
too special today

79:20 Auss shot

AUS Bresciano 15 yds in front of Brazil goal got high air ball, luckily
he had space and time a defendig Brazilian stumbled. He would up and
shot it with his right. It was a skillful hard shot but blocked by the
goalie. In his position I would have headed the ball forwards, used my
head to air dribble forwards 5 or 10 yds first; there was a big hole in
the Brazil line. I am surprised Bresciano did not get called for a high
kick. The announcer was beside himself over what a shot and what a
save. That's one reason they take these shots. The goalie had to dive a
little to his right but it was not that difficult a save.

83:40 auss header skillful by Viduka

85:10 Auss off misses
AUS Capt. Viduka got bouncing ball moving in same direction as him 10
yds in front of Brazil goal, lobbed it in towards the goal missed a
little high. This is the kind of situation I can take advantage of with
the air dribble.

After this there were fine wall passes up the right by auss

86:45 Auss offense
Kewell on left near sideline, 35 yds from Brazil goal, got slow
bouncer, one bounce pass, closest Brazilian 10 yds away, for me it
would have been ripe for starting an air dribble, he dribbled straight
forward about
10 yds while the defender retreated with him then lost the ball.

88:45 Brazil scores Brazil 2 AUS 0

CONCLUSION: Seems a good new offense would involve someone such as
myself who has good forward-movement air dribbling and ground dribbling
skills, playing Chipperfield's position, attacking from Chipperfield's
position, with AUS defenders dropping back in case something goes
wrong. Chipperfield was the left fullback for Australia.
