World Cup Day 9 USA ties Italy 1-1
Italy 1 vs USA 1
First Half
minute 1 (time on scoreboard this would be literally speaking second minute of play)
Italy comes out aiming for the head of their big tall 6 4 striker Toni, who is supposed to also be strong.
minute 2
Donovan of the USA overleads Convey, long pass bounced in front of convey, would have been great chance for a flashy aerial dribble flight had I been in Convey's place, thing is Donovan overled him.
min 5
Reyna overled Dempsey on ground pass near Italy goal line right side. Reyna had time and space, it was not a long pass, it did not put the recipient in a good position, seemed to me Reyna was doing just what looks good in the eyes of the dumb teacher, as opposed to what would be truly the best choice, such as attacking on the dribble a little in the air or on the ground before passing or shooting.
When you pass too quickly, the dumb teacher might find no fault, but you just put the recipient of the pass in a bad situation. And how could such a short ground pass, an easy one, such as this one from Reyna to Donovan, overlead the recipient? And it is this same Reyna, on the field screwing up, who according to the reports is getting the USA lineup changed based on who he is mad at, dissatisfied with.
min 9
USA right midfielder had huge amounts of space and time 35 yds from Italy goal, at right inside forward area. He just send a ground pass to a team-mate who had lots of defenders around him, the attack fizzled. Again, it was like the schoolkid doing what the dumb teacher will not find fault with, as opposed to what in the eyes of a smart soccer observer or player would be a better choice. Then again maybe these USAns lack the skill it takes to mount air or ground dribbling attacks against the defense. Problem with such lack of skill, is that the defense takes them for granted, fades back, allows them the time and space to do what they cannot do, while cutting off the chances of success when they do what they can do, which is pass off the ball to a team-mate. It is like basketball, if the guy cannot shoot, you drop back and let him have the shot, but cut off chances of success for him with regards to the things he is capable of.
min 11
Donovan of USA loses ball 25 yds out, he had time and space, he just attempted to dribble on the ground up to the 20, overled himself, lost the ball.
USA defender steals ball from Italy forward Toni on Toni's attempt to beat him on the ground dribble.
min 14
Convey uf USA gets on fast dribble up to 15 yds from goal, suddenly makes right angle cut which slows everything down and loses the momentum, again it seemed like a kid doing what will not offend the dumb teacher, but that in reality is bad choice. Here is Convey, with the momentum, dribbling forward 15 yds from Italy goal--what an opportunity against favored vaunted Italy--in the penalty area, he swivels to the inside, sends the ball to the middle all of a sudden the ball is 20 yds from the Italian goal, outside the penalty area.
min 15
USAn Dempsey steps over a few times in the right wing area, it didn't accomplish anything, the announcer was ecstatic about the quote footwork unquote. He passed in to Convey who had time and space and missed.
These USAns are being given plenty of time and space 25-35 yds from the Italy goal, they have the time to set up their individual attack but do not mount such individual attacks. The good little boys pass of, putting the recipients of the passes in tough positions.
min 18
Dempsey shot g from 20 yds, with eyes on the ground, luckily it went through the legs of a defender, missed several yards wide, slow low one bouncer shot; announcer was ecstatic "what a great shot". I was thinking, this guy just turns and shoots, with eyes looking at the ground, not even looking at the ball or at the defender's feet; he fires--no that is too complimentary--he shoots the ball right at a defender; even if the defender was not there it would have been a wide shot so it is off on two counts; the ball gets through the defender's legs luckily--Dempsey got it through his helfs unintentionally, his eyes were on the ground, not looking at the defender.
min 20
Bocanegra of USA from left wing area kicks in pass directly at defender, again seemed like kid trying to not get in trouble with the dumb teacher.
min 21 Italy scores
Penalty kick, by Italy 40 yds from USA goal. Italian completely open 8 yds in front of USA goal on low diving header knocked it in. The pass was well placed, but Gilardino was wide open. The announcer said it was because the USA's Pope foolishly tried to play the offside trap. What shocked me, is that this Italian was so wide open, that he could dive into the ball like you dive into a cool pool on a hot summer day when on vacation. He was so open there was nobody there to even make him worry about maybe getting kicked in the head by a USAn. Incredible.
min 25 or 26
40 yds out a USAn got a high air ball, he immediately tried to trap it, the Italian stole it. That is why I advocate not trapping balls but rather immediately beginning to move with them (the balls) on the first touch.
min 26 USA Scores
Italy scores on itself
Minute 28
Italian gets kicked out for elbowing a USAn. Now italy has to play for the rest of the game with just ten men.
So Donovan has gotten in trouble with his coach for lack of aggression vs Czechoslovakia, so sez ABC announcer.
min 30
USAn dribbles to middle, like a good little boy, he sends short ten yard grounder to a fellow USAn, who had two Italians right on top of him plus his back to the Italian end of the field, so end result was just pass recipient in a tough spot.
min 31
USAn McBride 40 yds out, sends 20 yd bouncer to right of USAn Captain Reyna who was 30 yds out in middle of field. McBride could have passed a better pass. A fast one bouncer to the outside in that situation struck me as a poor pass, McBride had plenty of time...and space...seemed he was inhibited by dumb teacher types who would hold him blameless for such a pass. In his place with all that time and space, I would have gotten the ball in the air and sent a lob pass to the inside of Reyna not to the outside towards the sideline.
min 35
Italian takes long shot ball goes in it was offsides goalie didnt even bother hustling, yet announcer thought the offside call was false. Weird. The offsides call is in doubt, the USA goalie is not hustling because he is so sure there has been an offside call.
min 38
announcer on and on about the shots Mcbride takes to the face and the head.
min 38
Dempsey comes down the right wing area, 45 yds from goal, looking for to make a long right cross, then decides on sending in short ground pass, slows down for a few yards prior to sending in his short ground pass to the player inside him and near him, I was thinking, if he is going to send in a short grond pass, why does he have to slow down before doing this? It produces loss of momentum, it telegraphs what is about to happen to the defense. You could tell from his body and his head, he had given up on the long pass idea, and was about to be a goody goody sending in a ground pass to his team-mate ten yds closer to the goal than him in the middle. Dempsey's head and body were obviously in the postion of a "dork" (terminology used by rude persons) about to send in a short goody goody ground pass.
min 41
USA captain Reyna had ball, time and space, 30 yds from Italy goal in middle of field, he sent a long cross to the left corner area, burying a team-mate in a difficult situation, the team mate ended up with his back to the middle of the field chasing down a ball in the corner, with a couple of Italians chasing him. I thought, ridiculous, here is the critic Reyna, being the kid who is a goody goody in the eyes of the simple minded teacher, "blamelessly"--in the eyes of simpletons-burying a team-mate in a corner, when he had the time and the space and the position to start a ground dribble, start an air dribble, get the ball in the air and then send a truly dangerous lob into a team-mate. And it is this Reyna guy who it seems has his team-mates terrorized into playing the blameless-in-the-eyes-of-the dumb-teacher type of soccer.
min 42
Reyna shoots the ball right into a sliding Italian, it as painfully obvious the shot would be blocked, Reyna shot it anyway, seemed He was blind, the announcer ws ecstatic about this shot right into a sliding italian...the dumb teacher probably thought Reyna was here blameless.
min 44
referee absurdly(?) kicked out American for a sliding tackle that was late, meaning it hit the other player's feet after the ball had gone 2 3 feet from the other player's feet.
min 45
Convey of USA dribbled past an Italian with a slick move in the left wing area of the field.
SECOND HALF
MIN 46
Pope of USA ejected from game for allegedly getting to offensive player's feet a little too late, after ball had left offensive player's feet. But it seemed Pope got feet and also ball. Announcer wants this to be ref's last game it is now 10 players on the field for Italy 9 for the USA. Thing is, not, is the ref right but what effect will this have on us the players, If there is this crackdown on these guys making these sliding tackles.
Such could make the game interesting. RE Pope getting kicked out for the sliding tackle, was he playing the ball or the man? If you graze the ball slightly with your toe while most of the impact is on the man's feet, is that a foul? Are such sliding tackles good for the sport, or do they create injuries and a boring game?
min 51
Bocanegra almost scored against his own team the USA on a header.
min 53
Dempsey did a good job of working his way down the sideline, got pushed over. The announcer loves the way Dempsey dribbles at the
"enemy", but he wants the ref who encourages such runs with strict calls on the defense, occupationally speaking beheaded.
min 55-56
Pirlo of Italia from 45 yds sent rocket line drive pass into team-mate in middle 25 yds from USA goalie. The pass merely put the team-mate in a very difficult situation. Problem is the simple minded coaches and players always blame the guy who gets the pass, they never blame the guy who makes the pass.
min 57
Italian in left wing position got a perfect long pass, easy to handle, time and space, sends in goody goody cross USA intercepts.
min 57
Reyna 25 yds from goal, plenty of time and space, "fires" lame shot. Announcer was ecstatic about how Reyna stole the ball before he did this.
min 58
Donovan of USA sends in long cross from left, misses target, overleads him, announcer calls it a good effort.
min 59
Dempsey on left edge of penalty box, traps long lob pass to the ground, then he just sort of stands there and watches the ball bounce a couple of times, no THREE TIMES before trying to get rid of it like a goody goody. These guys can trap long air balls, but they can't do things I find to be simple, such as so to speak fly with the ball a few yds, keeping the ball in the air, air dribbling, starting with scooping up a bouncing ball.
min 62
Donovan did a good job of dribbling down the middle and passing off to the left inside forward area to a team-mate, the goody goody team-mate shot on the first touch to please the moron coaches-fans-announcers, missed high and wide. All the announcer could say is what an effort by Donovan.
Minute 64
McBride of USA does a good job of shielding the ball.
Minute 64
USAN shoots in ball from left, it was a shot a good high schooler could make, it was right place at the right time, the ball went in, but a USAn was off-sides.
min 66
USA has been playing well with 9 men vs Italy's 10 men. Does that tell us something? Maybe the goody goody USAns, intimidated by the simple minded coaches announcers and fans, are using too much of this goody goody short pass type of stuff, as evidenced by the fact they do better with 9 men on the field than they do with 10 or even 11.
min 68-9
Zambrotta 25 yds out in the middle, got a line drive cross to his head, he used his head to drop the ball at his feet--which illustrates how the head can be used to catch a ball as opposed to head it away.
Which is great news for me because I can sprint while heading the ball keeping it close to me. But Zambrotta, after he dropped it to his feet, was clumsy about the ball bouncing in front of him. Alot of these otherwise skilled guys are clumsy with balls bouncing in front of them even when they have time and space. One thing I can do despite my defects is scoop up a bouncing ball and fly a few yards with it.
some time between minute 69 and minute 75
Pirlo 25 yds from USA goal, in middle, chipped ball into fellow Italian 5 yards from goal, the ball was a fine pass, uncomplimented by any announcer, he used his toe to chip it in, but in the USA such is considered to be the tackle football kick not soccer style kick in the USA all the kids are taught by all the dumb teacher types to abhor kicking the ball with the toe in soccer.
The Italian who got the ball in front of the goal got it in the exact position I always get the ball when I sprint while air dribbling it. He volleyed it towards the goal on the first touch. This incident significant in the sense that the Italian shot a chip pass of the type useful to players such as myself, even though when he chip passed the ball the ball was on the ground, not in the air. USA goalie made fine save. But this was a dangerous play by Italy.
min 75
Zambrotta sent choreographed heel pass to tam-mate behind his back.
min 76
Italian with ball at least a yd ahead of him, tackled from behind by sliding USAn. This was much worse a foul than other fouls in this game that resulted in ejections. What is noteworthy is the inconsistency of the ref--depending on how many people have been kicked out, how many have been carded, what mood people are in, the refs it seems are inconsistent judging from this one ref's conduct.
minute 78,
McBride misses heading the ball in, these things can be trapped with he head guys, look what the Italian Zambrotta (min 68-69) did!
Donovan of USA made a good dribble run down the right sideline eventually lost it.
minute 85
Beasley of USA and the Italian both played well fighting for a ball ahead of them, the nature of things is that these situations where both teams do well are ignored too much.
minute 87
Italian in middle 25 yds from USA goal had golden opportunity, ball bouncing in front of him with no horizontal movement, he sort of got clumsy and panicked the end result fruitless. These players are skilled but clumsy with bouncing balls. Bouncing balls provide me a big opportunity for initiating flights with the ball.
